Researcher’s Corner Overview

The Researcher's Corner is designed to provide PIAAC research-related resources including PIAAC data sets and analysis tools, data training, and research papers based on PIAAC data. It is also a place to post questions and view PIAAC experts' responses.

The data obtained from this rich international study include information from a background questionnaire that covers a range of critical questions related to education and training and a unique direct assessment of adult skills in literacy, numeracy and digital problem solving. PIAAC data enables researchers to conduct more in-depth research on adult skills using information not available from any other large scale assessment, and explore skills in relation to education, workforce, immigration, equity, health, and more.

PIAAC researchers from many different fields in the U.S. and in participating countries have explored the PIAAC data to investigate questions such as:

  • How do general cognitive skills interact with specific skills and knowledge acquired in majors to explain earnings? (Read more)

  • How have changes in literacy skills impacted GDP growth and labor productivity? (Read more)

  • Does readiness to learn mediate the effects of gender, age, work experience, and education on literacy, numeracy, and PS-TRE skill levels? (Read more)

Correctional system researchers have explored the PIAAC Prison Study data to answer questions such as:

  • What are the demographic and background characteristics and assessed skill levels of incarcerated adults with less than high school education attainment? (Read more)

  • What demographic and skill-level factors predict the aspiration to enroll in any education class or program among people in prison in the U.S.? (Read more)

In the U.S., in addition to information on the overall population, researchers can also access state and county level data for literacy and numeracy skills available through the PIAAC Skills Map. For more information, click here.
